Songdo Peninsula Overview

About 80 to 70 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era, the Dongnae Fault to the east of the Dadaepo–Songdo area and the Yangsan Fault to the west moved, pulling apart and sinking the land between the two faults to form the bowl-shaped Dadaepo Basin. A large lake formed in this basin and thick sedimentary layers accumulated; these layers are called the Dadaepo Formation. Depending on the characteristics of its rocks (the presence or absence of red beds and the content of volcanic material) and differences in depositional environment, the Dadaepo Formation is further divided into the Lower Dadaepo Formation and the Upper Dadaepo Formation. On the Songdo Peninsula, the Dadaepo Formation, selected as one of Korea's 150 geological outcrops, appears continuously along the coast from the lower to the upper layers, and together with the scenery of Songdo Beach, Korea's first beach, you can fully enjoy geological records such as dinosaur egg nest fossils, calcareous paleosols, dikes and faults.
