Seonamsa Temple (Busan) Overview

Beomeosa Temple is the head temple of the 14th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded in 675 by Wonhyo. At the time of its founding, it was known as Geonangsa (Seeangsa), and it is said that the temple name was changed to Seonamsa when martial artists practiced martial arts on the cliff face of the mountain behind the temple, or that it was renamed during the reconstruction in 1483 by Gokch'o. Seonamsa underwent major renovations in 1568 by Sinyeon, in 1718 by Seonwo, in 1918 by Dongun, and in 1955 by Hweosu. Beomeosa Temple operates a rest-type Templestay and offers various events such as Buddhist education college, Wonhyo Choral, Buddhist volunteer group, pottery making, and Yongwang prayer. The temple facilities include the Daeungjeon Hall as the center, along with Gyeolrokjeon, Gwanumjeon, Myeongbujeon Hall, Josajeon, Chiseonggak, Sanseonggak, Yosa-chae, and Jonggak, forming the Gyeolrok Temple complex, with a beautiful flowering dogwood tree growing on the stone pillar. The stone bridge spanning the stream running through the temple grounds is known as Gyeolrok Bridge, and the small waterfall flowing behind the Yongwangdan is known as Seonam Falls.
