Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School
Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School Overview
Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School is located in Jwacheon-dong, Dong-gu, and is Busan’s first modern women’s educational institution. It holds significant architectural value because the original form of the Western-style modern building, established in 1909, and the later additions are well preserved. Unlike most of Busan’s modern buildings, which were constructed during the Japanese colonial period, the Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School building is a Western-style structure built by Australian missionaries, and this value was recognized when it was designated as a Busan Metropolitan City Monument in May 2003. The exterior of the first floor of the building is stone, and the second floor is made of red brick, but it is unique in that the interior is lined with wood. The bricklaying technique used on the exterior of the building is highly skilled, and the stairs at the front of the building and the second-floor railing retain the appearance of early 20th-century Western-style buildings. Like other educational institutions established by missionaries, Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School taught the Bible and English, and also provided education in various subjects such as Korean, history, mathematics, and psychology. During the Japanese colonial period, when discriminatory education based on nationality and gender was practiced, Busanjin Ilsin Girls' School was a place that taught Koreans how to view the world as Koreans and as women. This nationalistic education later blossomed into fervent anti-Japanese spirit. On March 11, 1919, teachers and female students from this school took to the streets holding Taegeukgi flags they had made overnight, leading Busan and Gyeongnam region’s first independence movement demonstration.
