Bokcheon-dong Ancient Tombs, Busan Overview
Mound groups located on a hillside in Bokcheon-dong, Busan. Over 40 tombs have been identified through multiple excavation surveys, though most of the tombs remain buried underground. The tomb forms include earthen mounds with wooden chambers, pit-style stone chambers constructed with square stones and roofed, and simple pit tombs where bodies are directly buried. These mound groups are also known as the Heson-dae tomb group, named after the original name of the hill. Since initial excavations by Dong-A University uncovered over ten tombs, Pusan National Univ. excavated three tombs on the eastern slope of the hill in 1974. Subsequently, over 100 tombs were excavated and surveyed by the Pusan National Univ. Museum and the Busan City Museum. Many of these tombs have not been looted and have yielded a variety of artifacts. Pottery items such as curved rim bowls, wooden ladles, and earthenware lamps are characteristic of the Nakdonggang River downstream region. A variety of iron armor and helmets have also been unearthed.
