Ship Repair Yard Road
Ship Repair Yard Road Overview
This place served as the starting point and driving force of the revival of Korea's shipbuilding industry. The work of hammering off corroded paint, which is essential for repairing ships, is called kkangkkangi, which is why the area is also called Kkangkkangi-gil. Kkangkkangi Art Village, located on Surijoseonso-gil, is a village shaped like a beoseon (traditional Korean sock) that sits across from Jagalchi Market, where Yeongdodaegyo Bridge and Namhangdaegyo Bridge meet, and it has long been known as a shipyard village. In the late 19th century, the 'Tanaka Shipyard', which built Korea's first engine-powered boat, was established here, making it the birthplace of Korea's modern shipbuilding industry, and in the 1970s and 1980s it became a mecca of the ship repair industry on the back of the deep-sea fishing boom. Although it is not what it used to be due to the decline of the ship repair industry, about 10 ship repair yards and some 200 machine shops and ship parts companies are still located in the village. The village is also home to the former site of the Tanaka Shipyard, a ship experience center, a village museum and a village workshop.
