Cheongnyangsa Temple (Busan) Overview

There is Cheongnyangsa in Myeongji-dong, Busan, which has a shape resembling a golden chicken calmly nesting in a golden gyeokpo. Cheongnyangsa is located in a site considered one of the most auspicious locations from a feng shui and geomantic perspective, and it originated from a shrine dedicated to Dangsan grandmother, the guardian deity of the village. The exact founding date of Cheongnyangsa is unclear, but based on the detailed records on the back of a stone carving of Shakyamuni's post-buddha, it is generally believed to have been established in 1917. It is said that a monk named Ginku-so, the abbot of Jangyusa Mountain in Gimhae, nearby, established a temple at the site of the former Dangsan Hall, and three years later, in 1920, he enshrined the Shakyamuni post-buddha statue. Initially known as the Jangyusa temple, Cheongnyangsa was later renamed to "Yeonho," a name derived from the image of the temple standing alone above the surrounding area during floods, as if lotus flowers floating on water. Later, under the leadership of Honggyeong Sa, a pillar of Korean Buddhism, Cheongnyangsa was officially registered as a Beomeosa Temple in 1961, embodying the villagers' wish for clear weather during the flood-prone rainy season.
