Choryang Church Overview

Choryang Church was the first church established in Busan by missionary William Bearde in 1892, and it was the first church established by missionaries south of Han River. Initially, it began as Yeongseon County Church within the missionary base, and as its congregation grew, it used the office building located in front of Bongnae Elementary School in Yeongju-dong. In 1912, it purchased the property and converted it into a church. Subsequently, it went through phases as Yeongju-dong Church and Choryang 3·1 Church before being renamed Choryang Church. During the Japanese colonial period, Choryang Church was closely associated with anti-Japanese national independence movements. It led resistance efforts against the practice of shrine worship and became a secret prayer place for independence activists, which is significant. Currently, it operates the Choryang Church History Museum, displaying historical materials preserved by the church alongside the journey of Choryang Church through difficult times.
