Myosimsa Temple (Busan) Overview

Myosimsa Temple was founded in 1888 under the name Daeseongsa in what is now Toseong-dong, Seo-gu. From 1912, during the Japanese occupation, it served as a propagation hall of the Rinzai (Imje) school. The temple was run by Japanese people and, after liberation, was even sold to Christians; at that time some devotees moved the temple's sacred Buddhist treasures to the current site, and around the 1960s they brought a seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, a seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva statue, a Buddhist bell and a bell pavilion and re-founded the temple as Myosimsa. Myosimsa is an urban temple along the Sanbok-doro in Sujeong-dong, Dong-gu, with a sweeping view of Busan Port. The grounds contain the Daeungjeon (main hall), the Samseonggak and a bell pavilion. The Daeungjeon is five bays wide and three bays deep, with an ikgong-style hip-and-gable roof. In the Daeungjeon, a gilt-bronze seated Sakyamuni Buddha is attended on the left and right by Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas. There are also a painting of Ksitigarbha and the Ten Kings and a painting of the guardian deities, both made in 1946. Beside the Daeungjeon stands a standing Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva statue holding a child, enclosed in a protective glass shelter. Behind it, at the top of a flight of stairs, is the Samseonggak. Inside the Samseonggak are a Chilseong (Seven Stars) painting, a Mountain Spirit painting and a 30 cm-tall seated stone figure that appears to have been made in the modern era. Next to the standing Ksitigarbha statue is a modern L-shaped monks' quarters.
