Oeyangpo Artillery Battery Site

Oeyangpo is a harbor located in the southern end of Gadeokdo Island, Gangseo-gu, Busan Metropolitan City. In February 1904, the Japanese military, which had provoked the Russo-Japanese War, forcibly evicted 64 households from Oeyangpo to secure a military base in the area of the Korean Strait. Subsequently, the Japanese military dispatched the Third Temporary Construction Unit to establish a naval base, completed the construction, and stationed the Second Battalion of the Artillery Brigade of the Jinhae Bay Fort, and soon thereafter relocated the Artillery Brigade Headquarters to reinforce the garrison, thus transforming Oeyangpo into a military base prepared for naval warfare against the Russian fleet. In the Oeyangpo village, numerous Japanese-style buildings suspected to be military facilities, such as an artillery command office, guardhouse, offices, barracks, and storage rooms, still remain and are currently being used by local residents for residential purposes.
