Jang Gi-ryeo Memorial Sharing Center Overview
Dr. Jang Gi-rye was the foremost surgeon of his time and is known as Korea's Schweitzer in the field of general surgery. The Jang Gi-rye Memorial "More Sharing" Center opened in 2013 as a Memorial Hall dedicated to honoring Dr. Jang Gi-rye's lifelong commitment to practicing sharing with the poor and disadvantaged. At the Jang Gi-rye Memorial "More Sharing" Center, items that Dr. Jang Gi-rye used during his lifetime are on display, allowing visitors to learn about his achievements and his character, which was defined by a lifelong dedication to life-saving medical practices.
Dr. Jang Gi-rye was born in 1911 in Pyeongan-do and successfully performed the first-ever hepatic resection surgery for liver cancer in 1943, which was Korea's first such operation. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he relocated to Busan and began providing medical care to refugees and war victims. In 1951, he founded Busan Evangelical Hospital (the predecessor of today's Goseon University Evangelical Hospital) and served as its director for 25 years. He also held the positions of second dean of the College of Medicine at Pusan National University and hospital director. In 1968, he established the Cheongseok Medical Insurance Association, Korea's first medical insurance organization, enabling the poor to access medical treatment. After retiring from Evangelical Hospital in 1976, he continued to serve the community by founding Cheongseok Hospital in Sujeong-dong, Dong-gu, Busan, and by providing free medical services and various social welfare activities, living a life without retirement. Though not born in Busan, Dr. Jang Gi-ry in a true sense of service, he deeply empathized with the suffering of the marginalized and lived a life of genuine dedication, always respecting the dignity of human beings.
