Yeongdo Jonaegi Sweet Potato History Memorial Hall
Yeongdo Jonaegi Sweet Potato History Memorial Hall Overview
Yeongdo Jo-nai-gi village is the first region in Korea where sweet potatoes were cultivated. During the reign of King Yeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Jo-eum of Tongginsa brought sweet potatoes from Dae-mado, and first cultivated them in Yeongdo, thereby alleviating the people's famine. Thus, the Sweet Potato History Memorial Hall was established to commemorate and promote the historical significance and meaning of sweet potatoes, as well as the site of cultivation in Yeongdo, and to activate regional culture by connecting with surrounding areas.
The first floor houses the main Exhibition Hall, the second floor includes a café, a cooking experience room, and an educational space, and the rooftop Rooftop has been designed as a cultural space. Particularly, the Sweet Potato History Memorial Hall introduces the transmission pathways and historical timeline of sweet potatoes, as well as their origin, featuring sand art videos, sweet potato fairy tales, puzzle matching kiosks, and sketch interactive displays. Sculptural installations of sweet potato models and a park and play area with balustrades are popular among children, and the sweet potato café is also impressive. Walking along the trail connects to the Bongnaesan Mountain Dulle-gil Trail (6.5km), and from Friday to Sunday, between 1 PM and 5 PM, visitors can enjoy engaging and informative cultural tourism guided explanations.
