Gudeok Folk Arts Center
Gudeok Folk Arts Center Overview
Gudeok Folk Arts Center is located inside Daesin Park in Seodaesin-dong 3-ga, Seo-gu. It was built by Busan City as a hall of traditional culture for the western Busan (Seobusan) area and as a living educational venue for folk arts, where intangible cultural heritage is passed down and spread, time-honored customs are carried on, and the spirit of our ancestors is instilled. The basement floor is used as a training hall by the Gudeok Folk Arts Preservation Association, an incorporated association, and the 173-pyeong performance yard has tiered seating for 1,500 people. The intangible cultural heritage items it holds are 'Busan Nongak' (Busan City Intangible Cultural Heritage) and 'Gudeok Mangkkaeteo Dajigi Sori' (a ground-tamping song; Busan City Intangible Cultural Heritage).
The Gudeok Folk Arts Preservation Association, which boasts an outstanding record of awards at various national folk art competitions, holds an annual regular performance and the Busan Folk Arts Competition to carry on the lineage of Korean traditional sounds, and continues its activities not only in teaching Busan Nongak but also in discovering new folk culture. The center carries out transmission activities; for Busan Nongak, three schools—Busan Maritime High School, Busan Information Design High School and Dongho Information Girls' High School—are operated as designated transmission schools, and a free pungmul class for citizens and students is held once a year.
