Haedong Yonggungsa Temple
Haedong Yonggungsa Temple Overview
Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is one of the most visually stunning Buddhist temples in Korea — built directly on a rocky seaside cliff in Gijang, with waves crashing around its foundations. Unlike most Korean temples nestled in mountain forests, this one faces the open sea, creating a truly otherworldly atmosphere. The approach involves walking down a stone-lined path past grotesque guardian statues, a 12 Zodiac animal zodiac fountain, and a series of prayer halls perched above the water. Legend says prayers offered here are always answered — making it one of Korea's most visited wish-fulfillment temples. Sunrise visits are particularly magical, when the first light catches the pagoda and the sea simultaneously. Allow 1–2 hours to fully explore the grounds.
