Myeongji Market Overview
Myeongji Market is a representative traditional market of Busan's Gangseo area with a 50-year history; having gone through the days of a five-day market and a dawn market, it has been famous as a live fish market for the past 30 years. Thanks to its location where the Nakdonggang River converges, catches are abundant and the distribution distance from the source is short, which helps keep the live fish fresh, and some 120 shops are in business. With the 'Jeoneo (Gizzard Shad) Festival,' Myeongji Market's pride, held every late summer, it has made a name for itself as one of Busan's true representative markets along with Jagalchi Market, Gukje Market and Kkangtong Market. In autumn, gizzard shad has more than three times as much fat as in spring, making it savory and highly nutritious; it is the star of the proverb 'Even a daughter-in-law who left home comes back at the smell of grilled gizzard shad.' At the festival there are various participatory programs such as pungmul troupe performances, a song contest and gizzard shad slicing, so we recommend combining a traditional market outing with a visit to the festival.
