Bupyeong Kkangtong Market
Bupyeong Kkangtong Market Overview
Busan's Bupyeong Kkangtong Market is said to have gotten its name because, after the Korean War (6·25), when U.S. troops were stationed here, all kinds of goods were smuggled in along with military supplies, and in particular many kinds of canned goods such as fruit and fish came in, so the market came to be called Kkangtong ('tin can') Market.
It was also called 'Dottegi Market,' and it is said that at that time imported goods were supplied through here to major markets across the country. Because the market was so large and it was said that there was nothing it didn't have, including foreign goods, Dottegi Market came to be called an international market; today, as the import of many diverse products has been permitted, the market has shrunk somewhat, but it is still a famous spot where you can feel its reputation and strength. It now also sells imported liquor, clothing, decorative items, accessories, fashion goods and some foreign electronics such as mini cassette players. Along the market street, which stretches about 110 m, there are 11 local food stalls, 6 multicultural food stalls including Japanese and Filipino, and 13 clothing and accessory stalls. At the entrance to Bupyeong Kkangtong Market and at the crossroads inside the market, various attractions such as magic and guitar performances are offered twice a day, and colorful LED lighting greets you alongside the market.
