Geumjeongsan Mountain Fortress

Geumjeongsan Mountain Fortress (금정산성) is the largest stone fortress in Korea, encircling Geumjeongsan Mountain with walls stretching 17.3km. Built in 1703 during the reign of King Sukjong, the fortress was erected as a defensive measure against Japanese invasion following the trauma of the Imjin War. Today it is a beloved hiking destination with well-maintained trails passing four stone gates, a Joseon-era village selling traditional rice wine (makgeolli), and panoramic ridgeline views over Busan and the surrounding mountains. The hike from Beomeosa Temple to the North Gate takes about 1.5 hours through dense forests. The fortress also offers connections to Geumgang Park via cable car. Best visited in autumn for foliage colors.
