Ibagu-gil Overview

Choryang Ibagu-gil is a 1.5 km historical and cultural walking trail built along the Sanbok-doro (mountainside road) around Choryang-dong in Dong-gu, Busan. "Ibagu" means "story" in the Gyeongsang-do dialect, and this trail is a vivid open-air museum holding the major stories of Busan's modern and contemporary history.

History of Ibagu-gil

The trail originates from a hillside shantytown formed during the Korean War in the 1950s, when refugees built unlicensed shacks on the slopes of Choryang-dong and lived there. Narrow alleys, steep stairs, and warm-hearted murals convey the lives of the people of Busan who lived through an era of war and poverty.

Main Attractions

The 168 Stairs monorail (cart) is a Busan landmark installed so that elderly and disabled people can comfortably climb the steep alley. At Ibagu Gongjakso (Ibagu Workshop), you can see exhibitions on the village's history, culture, and art, and from the Kkakkomak Observatory you can take in Busan Port and Yeongdo at a glance.

Connection to Busan Station

Choryang Ibagu-gil is highly accessible, just a 10-minute walk from Busan Station. A half-day tour of the old downtown that starts at Busan Station and continues along Ibagu-gil → Yeongdodaegyo Bridge → Jagalchi Market is popular.
