Site of Gwansuok and Choryang Waegwan Overview

Kansugo was the residence of Kansu, the head of the Choryang Waegwan. At that time, the eastern area began to develop as the city center first, centered around Yongdusan, because it was close to the pier where ships docked from the sea. The Japanese people arrived by ship and began to live centered on the east, and they would have passed through Kansugo to enter the Waegwan. Stone steps remain at the site where Kansugo once stood. The Choryang Waegwan played a central role in trade between Japan and Korea. The Choryang Waegwan, built around Yongdusan, was filled with facilities for the convenience of the Japanese people, including shrines. Today, a stele marking the site of the Choryang Waegwan is placed at the junction where three entrances to the park meet, indicating that this place was once the Choryang Waegwan.
