Daegaksa Temple (Busan) Overview

Daegoksa is a temple located in the central area of Busan city, beginning as the Buwonbongsa Busan Bilyeon, the branch temple of the Japanese Jodo Shinshu sect during the opening of the port. The Buwonbongsa Busan Bilyeon was the Japanese temple with the most Buddhist followers in Busan at that time, serving as a pioneer of Japanese Buddhism in Korea. After liberation, the Buwonbongsa Busan Bilyeon came under the jurisdiction of the Korean government, and when the government's administrative department conducted asset transfers, the temple's land and buildings were acquired through auction and subsequently established as the Gyeongnam Buddhist Sect Management Office, before being re-established as a Korean temple by its founder, which is the current Daegoksa. The relics from before the founding include only the banjong and stone lanterns, while the Daewongjeon and Jinseonsaritap were constructed later. The present Daewongjeon is a large building constructed using a special architectural method without central pillars, made of reinforced concrete, capable of accommodating approximately 1,000 people.
