Gyeongsang Jwasuyeong Fortress Site Overview

Gyeongsang Jwasuye-ong Fortress Site was the original headquarters of the old Busan military command of Gyeongsang Province. Jwasuyeong was a military district established during the Joseon period to govern the southeast coast, and since the southern region has long suffered frequent attacks by foreign pirates due to its geographical position, two military districts—Gyeongsang Jwasuyeong in Busan and Gyeongsang U-suyeong in Tongyeong—were established to defend the southern region. Originally, Jwasuyeong was located in Gamman-dong, Nam-gu, but during the reign of Taejong, it was moved to Ulsan's Gwunpo, and it was later relocated to its current location in Suyeong-dong just before the Imjin War. The construction period of Jwasuyeong is not precisely documented, but it is said to have been reconstructed in 1692. There were four gates—Yongilmun, Hosomun, Jujakmun, and Gongjinmun—located in the east, west, south, and north of Jwasuyeong, and at specific times, the north-facing gongs were struck on the Bongmun-ro and Gwanhae-ro towers to open and close the gates. In addition, there were three wells, four drainage channels, Onseong, Chiseong, and bulwarks, but during the Japanese colonial period, most of these structures were destroyed, and today only remnants such as stone foundations, Hongye-mun, drainage channels, and the southern gate remain, which suggest the existence of the fortress.
