Yeongjuam Hermitage (Busan)
Yeongjuam Hermitage (Busan) Overview
Yingzhou Am is a hall of Beomeosa Temple, the head office of the Daegu Buddhist Sect of the Jogye Order, located in the Baesan area of Suyeong-gu, Busan Metropolitan City, in the central part of Busan. Founded in 1540 as a cave temple known as "Togokjeol," it was reconstructed in 1940, and due to its beautiful surroundings and suitability for meditation, it was said to resemble the scene of immortals residing and practicing in the mythical Yingzhou Mountain, thus earning the name Yingzhou Am. In 1972, Venerable Jeonggwan and Venerable Beomsan re-established the temple, giving it its current form, at the time having only one small Inpyeong-dong hall. Yingzhou Am is actively involved in Buddhist popularization and social welfare initiatives. It established the Buddhist Social Welfare Corporation, Bokgukto, and conducts various welfare programs, including the Comnet House to assist people with disabilities in reintegration into society, the elderly care facility Sangrokjeong Baesan Silver Village, as well as Gaegeum Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, Yangjeong Youth Center, and Yangjeong Jaga Elderly Welfare Center. The temple complex consists of various halls such as the Daewong Pavilion, Wontong Boga Pavilion, Hwajang Won (Seungbang), and Samseong Gyeok. Within the temple grounds are a kindergarten, a preschool, and the Sangrokjeong Baesan Silver Village. The Daewong Pavilion is a two-story building with a Dapofu-style, eight-sided roof, with the lower floor used as a temple office and kitchen, and the upper floor serving as a Buddhist hall.
