Gwaneumsa Temple (Busan) Overview

Located in the city center, Gwaneumsa is the Busan branch of Songgwangsa of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. It was founded on May 1, 1940, when the monk Illyeon built a small hut called Gwaneumsa on Seunghaksan Mountain, whose name means 'mountain riding a crane', and practiced and spread Buddhism there. Later, monks' quarters were built, followed by a Dharma hall and rear quarters, and the temple grounds were expanded; in 1984 it was registered as the Busan branch of Songgwangsa. Gwaneumsa holds volumes 4 to 7 of the Lotus Sutra (Myobeop Yeonhwagyeong), designated a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Busan Metropolitan City. Its printing blocks were based on a Lotus Sutra transcribed by the Joseon-era master calligraphers Seong Dal-saeng and his brother Seong Gae to pray for the repose of their late father, using as its source text the translation by Kumarajiva with commentary by Jiehuan.

It is a later reprint of woodblocks carved in 1405 at Ansimsa Temple on Dosolsan Mountain in Jeolla-do under the direction of the Buddhist practitioner Sinmun, and it can be seen to be a relatively recent reprint rather than a first edition. It is an incomplete set, with only the second book (volumes 4–7) of the original seven volumes in two books remaining, and the book shows some traces of water damage from moisture at the top and bottom overall. The Lotus Sutra held by Gwaneumsa was carved and printed during the reign of King Taejong in the early Joseon period, and it is a Tangible Cultural Heritage of outstanding value for Buddhist history and bibliography, providing important material for the study of early Joseon Buddhist scriptures and bibliography.
